Manteca Mayors Committee on the Arts – History 1986 - 2008
In 1986 Jack Snyder, the City of Manteca’s Mayor; had a vision of promoting art in our community. That vision developed with eight organizations all having the common denominator “Art”. These organizations had the same desire and passion as Mr. Snyder in representing all aspects of performing and visual arts. Creating the Manteca Mayor’s Committee on the Arts, (MMCA) as an umbrella organization; these individuals were dedicated to developing and promoting all forms of art for the benefit of our community.
Now, twenty plus years later and moving into a new era the MMCA has grown to 21 organizations. The MMCA has been recognizing the Artists in our community for the past twenty-one years at our Annual Arts Award Reception, which is held at the Senior Center on the last Sunday of February. The Arts Award Reception was again a vision of Jack Snyder and the first members of the MMCA.
The Arts Awards Reception is open to the public to help the MMCA recognize and honor local artists for their wide variety of talent in visual and performing arts that they bring to our community. This is an enjoyable afternoon of entertainment, desserts and beverages as well as art work displayed by MMCA members. Also, for those art lovers eager to add unique items to their collection or décor some of the art is offered for sale or raffled off in an opportunity drawing.
The individual organizations of the MMCA as well as the public are invited to nominate adult individuals who have demonstrated the above average art skills, talent and promotion of the arts in the following categories: Artist of the Year (Excellence within their own art medium and activity in the art community) Arts Recognition (Own art medium) and Special Recognition Award Community (Activity in the art community).
In addition to the awards presented to adult individuals mentioned above; local high school art departments have been asked to submit nominations for Student Art Awards. Over the past few years local high school age students that have performed or gone above and beyond the normal arts standards in their schools and community have been recognized for their talents in the arts. The MMCA recognizes these student nominees with certificates and the winning student(s) who receives a monetary grant of $50 to promote and further their interest and talents in the Arts.
The MMCA is the thriving and growing organization it is today because of the dream and dedication of Jack Snyder and those first eight organizations who has inspired ‘The Arts’ in many of us in our community and who want to continue his dream for the benefit for all.
The Mayor’s Committee on the Arts provides assistance to our members and their organizations with both logistical and financial support. MMCA has no membership fees or dues, our members are only asked to attend six (6) meetings out of twelve (12) and assist the committee on our annual Arts Awards Reception and fundraising. We encourage our members to be involved, support and promote art related activities in our community and our member’s organization’s activities.
The Manteca Mayor’s Committee on the Arts welcomes all who are interested in art related goals for our community. MMCA meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Manteca Senior Center’s Library, 295 Cherry Lane, Manteca.
